2023 Year in Review

From the CEO

At the heart of our organization lies a deep commitment to making a positive impact on the communities we serve

I joined the Mount Pleasant Group (MPG) as President & CEO on October 31, 2022. I am very grateful for this unique opportunity to learn from and work alongside a tremendous team of colleagues who are deeply committed to supporting grieving and bereaved families in and around Toronto. After all, that has been the mission of MPG for nearly two centuries.

Hospice & Palliative Care Support

+

We continued to provide much-needed support and doubled our donations to 14 hospices and palliative care organizations across the GTA.

Working through Hospice and Palliative Care Ontario (HPCO), we funded:

  • 12 bursaries providing full HPCO conference registrations and accommodations for Indigenous delegates

  • 30 full registration bursaries to staff or volunteers from 15 hospices in the GTA

We have contributed more than $1M in financial support to HPCO since our partnership began in 2011.

Fiscal 2023 was the third consecutive year that we have donated to 36 food banks throughout the GTA, as the need has never been greater.

So far, we have donated more than $800,000 to this essential cause.

  1. The Perpetual Care Trust Fund generates income to pay for the maintenance of our cemeteries. It is legislated by the Province of Ontario and the principal cannot be touched, only the annual income. Under law:
    • 40% of the selling price of the interment rights for every grave is set aside in the Fund
    • 20% of the crypt interment rights
    • 15% of niche interment rights
The annual income from the Fund must be used for specific maintenance to ensure the general upkeep and appearance of the cemetery property.
  2. The Prepaid Trust Fund is administered along similar lines. All revenues from people purchasing cemetery and funeral services in advance of need are held in a trust fund until that product or service is delivered.
